Penamaan Arah Atom

Atom adalah suatu satuan dasar materi, yang terdiri atas inti atom serta awan elektron bermuatan negatif yang mengelilinginya. Inti atom terdiri atas proton yang bermuatan positif, dan neutron yang bermuatan netral. Elektron-elektron pada sebuah atom terikat pada inti atom oleh gaya elektromagnetik. Indeks Miller membentuk sistem notasi dalam kristalografi untuk bidang kisi dalam kisi kristal. Secara khusus, keluarga bidang kisi dari kisi Bravais ditentukan oleh tiga bilangan bulat h, k, dan l. 

Aturan indeks miller tentang arah atom antara lain:

1. Arah atom ditentukan oleh posisi atom tujuan pada garis koordinat tiga sumbu
2. Penulisan arah atom dengan simbol
[ u v w ], dimana:
U = arah x
V = arah y
W = arah z

Penentuan arah atom juga diasumsikan posisi atom dalam struktur kisi kubik sederhana

Pada kisi kubik sederhana panjang rusuk-rusuknya adalah 1 satuan dan aturan arahnya juga sama dengan penamaan bidang yaitu:
X (+) = arah depan
Y (+) = arah kanan
Z (+) = arah atas

Beberapa hubungan sederhana antara bidang dan arah atom

1. [ u v w ] tegal lurus pada ( h k l ) bila:
U = h, v = k, dan w = l
Contoh: [ 1 1 1 ] tegak lurus pada ( 1 1 1 )
2. [ u v w ] sejajar dengan ( h k l ) bila:
u.h + v.k + w.l = 0
3. dua bidang tegak lurus sesamanya, jika:
h1.h2 + k1.k2 + l1.l2 = 0
4. dua arah tegak lurus sesamanya, jika:
u1.u2 + v1.v2 + w1.w2 = 0
5. sudut antara 2 bidang atau sudut antara 2 arah berlaku hubungan:
